Dan Antonelli on How He Grew KickCharge Creative From a Backyard Hobby

I work in digital, where most of what I make lives on a screen. Dan Antonelli, founder of KickCharge Creative, gets to see his work out in the world, on trucks, billboards, and storefronts.

I've spotted A1 Garage Door trucks in several states, and here in Colorado I often see a plumbing van and recognize a KickCharge design right away.

I recently sat down with Dan to talk about how he got started, why branding matters so much for home service companies, and how he thinks about AI.

From the backyard to 50 employees

KickCharge is celebrating its 30th year, and Dan's story started about a decade before that. As a teenager, he lettered contractors' vans in his parents' backyard. He loved seeing those trucks on the road afterward, knowing he had made them. Forty years later, he still gets that same thrill when he sees one of his billboards or brands.

In high school, Dan spent hours at home hand-lettering alphabets, building a craft he would use for the rest of his career. That drive to keep improving still guides him. He treats every award as a milestone and keeps his team focused on making tomorrow's work even better.

KickCharge now has more than 50 employees who share his passion. A wall in their office shows about 100 contractors posing proudly with their trucks, families, and crews, under a simple message: we build brands that change lives. It reminds the whole team how much their work can shape a business.

The truck is the most important canvas

Dan's start in vehicle lettering gave him a clear view of where a home service logo matters most. He sees the truck as the brand's most visible application, because it's what the whole community sees every day as it drives through town.

Many contractors start with a logo from a web designer or sign shop. As they grow, they need a brand built to stand out on a vehicle. That's why many KickCharge clients reach out at around $2 to $3 million in revenue, when they're ready for a brand that can carry them to their next stage of growth.

Becoming five-mile famous

Dan helps contractors become five-mile famous, so that everyone within five miles of their shop knows their name. Only a small share of homeowners can name a home service contractor when they need one, which gives a memorable brand a huge advantage. When a homeowner needs help months later, they remember the great-looking truck in a neighbor's driveway and search for that company by name. That kind of recognition lowers marketing costs and builds lasting demand.

What a brand really is

Dan describes a brand as a wheel. The logo sits at the hub, and everything else extends from it: the story, voice, messaging, graphics, trucks, uniforms, billboards, and social media. A strong hub makes it easy to build a wheel that rolls smoothly and efficiently.

He often cites Roy Williams of Wizard of Ads, who points out that remarkable businesses get far more out of every marketing dollar. Naming plays a big role here. A distinctive, memorable name gives a company a head start from day one and gives customers something they want to remember.

For Dan, a great brand shapes how a homeowner sees a company before the first phone call or knock on the door. People hire companies they know, like, and trust, so a strong brand builds familiarity, signals a great experience, and earns trust early.

A strong brand pays off internally too. It lifts culture, morale, and recruiting, and it shows employees the company is investing in its future. Dan often watches owners light up with fresh energy about their business after a rebrand.

How Dan transformed A1 Garage Door

Tommy, the owner of A1 Garage Door, was already doing about $30 million in revenue when he chose to rebrand. Dan admires owners like Tommy who keep pushing forward and see that their next stage of growth calls for a stronger brand.

Dan built on the brand's existing strengths. Tommy's face had appeared in years of marketing, so Dan turned it into a friendly caricature. He kept the red and paired it with warm dark brown and ivory for a more inviting, premium feel. He also streamlined the trucks down to the essentials, giving them a clean, confident look.

Dan believes great design comes from distilling a message to its purest form, because simplicity makes the biggest impact. He encourages every owner to look at their trucks and ask whether they reflect the quality of service they deliver today. Success is a reason to invest in an even stronger brand, one that matches where the company is headed.

The numbers behind the brand

Dan loves creating beautiful work, and he's especially excited about how that work drives results. For the second edition of his book, Branded, Not Blanded, released in May, he focused heavily on the data.

A digital marketing partner compared 25 websites for KickCharge-branded companies with 25 other home service websites. The KickCharge brands drew about 550 branded name searches a month, roughly ten times the comparison group, and converted website visitors at 12%, double the comparison group's rate.

Client results tell the same story. Comfort Calvary Heating and Air grew revenue 121% within six months of its rebrand, and All City Plumbing added $187,000 in just three months. Other clients have doubled their average tickets and lifted booking rates by 15 to 25%. Dan encourages owners to think about what even a 5% gain in booking rate could mean on a $1,500 average ticket. His clients consistently tell him they're thrilled with the investment and wish they had rebranded sooner.

Why Dan writes books

Dan has a long publishing history. He released Logo Design for Small Businesses in 2000, with a second edition in 2004, followed by Building a Big Small Business Brand and then Branded, Not Blanded in 2022. He wrote the latest book to give home service owners a practical guide built specifically for their industry, packed with 30 years of experience.

Contractors are experts in their own trades, and Dan wanted to give them the same expertise in branding. He measures success by how many lives he can impact, and readers who apply the book's lessons to their own businesses count toward that.

Building the brand over time

As KickCharge grew, Dan wanted every client touchpoint to stay consistent with the brand his team created. That led to Power Hours, an ongoing design program for billboards, brochures, print ads, and social media. KickCharge later acquired a digital marketing company and now manages full digital marketing for about 50 home service businesses.

About six months ago, the company launched KickCharge One, which brings brand, digital marketing, email marketing, social media, and print together under one roof. Clients love working with a single partner and having confidence that everything they publish stays on brand and on voice, which frees them to focus on operations.

AI and authenticity

Dan sees AI as a useful tool for sparking ideas and speeding up content work. For a lasting brand, he believes authenticity comes from human craft. Professional brand design delivers scalable vector files, original trademark-ready artwork, and the emotional nuance that makes mascots and logos connect with people.

He shared the example of Home Run Roofing. The client started with an AI-generated concept, and KickCharge refined it into a polished, expressive mascot. Once people saw the before and after side by side, the value of a skilled designer was clear. KickCharge also just had its best year ever.

I see the same balance in my own work at NaiL, where we build AI voice receptionists. Our goal is to support great human teams by covering after-hours calls and holidays, so customers always get a response. Used this way, AI strengthens efficiency while people provide the genuine connection, and that's exactly how KickCharge uses it too.

Dan's parting advice was that success is the perfect moment to invest in a brand worthy of where you're going.
